Supreme Court questions ‘lightning speed’, 24-hour procedure appointing Arun Goel as Election Commissioner
A Constitution Bench led by Justice K.M. Joseph had asked Attorney General R. Venkataramani on November 23 to produce the files concerning Mr. Goel’s appointment after petitioners alleged that it was “hurriedly” done.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, for the petitioner, said that Mr. Goel was a Secretary in the government on Friday. He took voluntary retirement that day and was appointed as Election Commissioner on Saturday and took charge on Monday.
India test fires Agni-3 nuclear capable ballistic missile
India on Wednesday carried out a successful launch of Agni-3 Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile from A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha.
Agni series of missiles constitute the backbone of India’s nuclear weapons delivery which also includes the Prithvi short range ballistic missiles and fighter aircraft. India has also completed its nuclear triad and operationalised its second strike capability, with nuclear ballistic missile submarine INS Arihant undertaking deterrence patrols.
Kuki-Chin Bangladeshi refugee
More than 270 members of the Kuki-Chin community from Bangladesh who entered Mizoram on November 20 are being referred to as “officially displaced persons” in State government records, as India does not have a law on refugees.
More than 270 Chin-Kuki people from the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) in Bangladesh have taken refuge in southern Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district following an alleged offensive by the Bangladesh Army against an armed group of the community.
Takthok monastery of Ladakh
Takthok Monastery (also known as Thag Thog or Thak Thak) is a Buddhist monastery in Sakti village in Ladakh, northern India, located approximately 46 kilometres east of Leh.[1] It is the only monastery in Ladakh belonging to the Nying-ma-pa or Red Hat sect. The name Takthok, literally meaning 'rock-roof' was named because both its roof as well as walls are made up of rock. It belongs to the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and approximately 55 lamas reside there. It is the only Nyingma monastery in Ladakh.(SOURCE - WIKIPEDIA)
Lt. Gen. Asim Munir
